Marry a Farmer
By Amy Owens, The Singles Coach
I’ve spent the past 20 years teaching and counseling singles in matters of the heart. One of the things I’ve learned about women is that what they say they are looking for in a man doesn’t match with what they really want in a mate.
Fairly universally women say want to marry “a suit” – a tall, handsome, professional man with advanced degrees, good social and conversational skills and an income that will keep them in the style to which they would like to become accustomed.
What they really want is a man of good character who cherishes them and treats them – and the things that are important to them – with respect.
Good character and suits are not joined at the hip. There are plenty of suits who are not very nice people. You wouldn’t want to trust your life, your money, your kids or your heart and soul to them.
When women lament the scarcity of “nice” suits – men of good character who wear suits, I suggest they define more clearly the kind of man they want to marry. Then I encourage them to consider marrying a man who doesn’t wear a suit to work.
Consider marrying a farmer. Farmers are patient, nurturing, hardworking, and can fix anything. They understand your need for a flower garden and have time to travel to warm places during the winter months. The best part of marrying a farmer is that after he’s spent the day working alone, he’s ready for conversation with you.
Or marry a carpenter. Carpenters are physically strong, creative, artistic, and appreciate beautiful things.
Or marry a teacher. Teachers are interested in books, learning, and children. They make a huge positive impact in the lives of a whole generation of kids. They have great stories to tell and will always be home for the holidays.
Or marry an electrician – my personal favorite. Electricians are smart, make good money, and are good with their hands. You’ve got to love that!

I realize my descriptions are simplistic generalizations, but please work with me here. The point is to widen your search for a mate. Pay more attention to who a man is on the inside and pay less attention to what he wears to work.
Dr. Neil Clark Warren’s wonderful book, Falling in Love for All the Right Reasons, is a great resource for helping you get clear about the type of man you should be looking for. I highly recommend it.
One more suggestion – consider short men, too.
